Moving to the southeastern coast of North Carolina means acclimating yourself to the most beloved dishes and cuisine of the local area. For those of us in Brunswick County, and the low country of North Carolina, this usually involves falling in love with seafood. And, one of the most popular seafoods during the fall and winter is a salty, briny oyster.
Lucky residents of Southport, Oak Island and the surrounding areas can find these salty delicacies in numerous establishments. A few to note include:
Earning its name from its extensive menu of oysters and fresh seafood, this popular spot can be found along the downtown streets of Southport. Pop in for a quick bite while shopping or visiting the waterfront. Be sure to order The Kathryn with artichoke, white wine, parmesan cream sauce and basil or the Simply Southern with collards, ham, and bacon topped with pimento cheese.
Featuring an assorted menu with some quality cajun flair, Shagger Jack's is a local and tourist favorite with indoor and outdoor (dog-friendly) seating. Lightly fried oysters can be ordered as a platter with cole slaw and fries, or as a po'boy sandwich topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and house-made remoulade.
Seated right on the Intracoastal Waterway, boasting gorgeous sunset views is Fishy Fishy Restaurant. With dock side service available and a menu offering everything from delicious appetizers to seafood platters, you're sure to find something for the seafood lovers and non-seafood lovers in your crew! Opt for the highly-sought after seafood plate or add their mouth-watering oysters to any salad.
Is there any other way than the Island Way? This oceanfront restaurant neighbors Ocean Crest Fishing Pier and offers some of the best views of any place in Brunswick County. Featuring steaks and seafood, be sure to stop by for a romantic dinner and to grab their oysters on the half shell before diving into your meal!
Oysters can be enjoyed a variety of different ways like on the raw bar, steamed, fried or roasted. The only thing that stands in your way from devouring these filters of the ocean is the act of shucking (opening) the oysters. While the process seems intimidating, it's actually very simple.
While oysters are technically harvested between October and March, they can be enjoyed year round. In Brunswick County, we celebrate all that is the oyster during the NC Oyster Festival. This annual family-friendly event includes everything from an oyster roast and arts and crafts festival to a full entertainment line-up and so much more!

A south-facing beach is an ideal spot to view the Christmas Star on this Winter Solstice Eve.
This year, on the eve of the winter solstice, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will be visible in the southeastern sky shortly after sunset. But this occurrence doesn't always happen on the longest night of the year, or even at night time. According to NASA, it's been 800 years since the last time it was observed in the early night sky, and some speculate that this same phenomenon may have been the Christmas Star describedin the story of the nativity. Find a place with a clear view of the southeast horizon shortly after sunset on December 21st for the most striking views. But don't worry if there's too much cloud cover. The convergence occurs gradually over the course of about a week.

While we are thankful that our community was not among the hardest hit by Hurricane Dorian, there are many people still in need.
If you, a friend, or a neighbor need help, please contact Leslie Stanley, the Brunswick County Emergency Services Volunteer and Nonprofit Coordinator at 910-253-2589 or by email at leslie.stanley@brunswickcountync.gov.
We will never forget those who helped us in our time of need, and some of us who experienced minimal damage from Hurricane Dorian find volunteering to be an excellent release from the pent up energy, anxiety and stress generated by the storm! Several such opportunities are listed below.
The North Carolina Office of Recovery & Resiliency works with several other state agencies to provide information and coordinate both donations and volunteer labor for the most critical projects. These include ongoing help for areas affected by Florence & Matthew.
The North Carolina chapter of VOAD – Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster is a resource for groups and individuals reaching out for help and organizing relief efforts throughout our state. Their focus on cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration facilitates the work of many non-profits, including Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross and many faith based groups. VOAD's role is to bring organizations together and enable them to understand each other and work together during times of disaster preparedness, response, relief and recovery. They have a lengthy list of projects and unmet needs.
In the Bahamas, where Dorian had the most tragic impacts, there are several international groups we can reach out to, including the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
One grass-roots organization, World Central Kitchen, pre-positioned their resources in advance of the storm and within two weeks were serving 20,000 meals a day in Nassau, Abaco, and Grand Bahama. You can find training and service opportunities on their website. They also accept donations.
The Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation has even set up an Amazon Smile account to make it easy for us to donate basic clothing, shelf stable food products and a few toiletry items.
We remember how grateful we were with each step our community took on the road to recovery after Florence. Electricity, potable water, open roads, fully stocked grocery stores and all of the people who make these things possible cannot be taken for granted. In situations like these, giving back is a true expression of gratitude and we are fortunate to have so many strong organizations helping us do just that.

There are plenty of beautiful places to visit in North Carolina, but few can compare to the majestic grandeur of the barrier islands and the N.C. Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve. Their peaceful serenity has lured everyone from sailors to scholars for centuries.
The past year was an eventful one for the area, and while the winds and waves of Hurricane Florence left their mark, it wasn't enough to dampen the spirit of residents or dissolve their resolve to make Bald Head Island the state's most popular destination. It is because of their efforts that demand for Bald Head Island homes for sale is as strong as ever.
The 191 acres of the Bald Head Woods are bordered by the Cape Fear River, and to the south and east by the Atlantic. This creates a picturesque setting of saltwater swamps, tree-filled forests, and pristine beaches that is unrivaled in the state. The massive Live and Laurel Oaks are among the largest in the state and tower over the surrounding landscape. Like stalwart guardians, their dense canopy protects a wide range of flora and fauna that flourish below.
Like many ecosystems, the area is facing a number of challenges. Rising sea levels, changing climates, and air and water pollution along the coast are significant concerns. N.C. Coastal Reserve staff are actively studying the habitat and taking steps to protect and preserve the watershed for generations to come. In fact, their Herculean efforts to protect and restore the habitat following Hurricane Florence are worthy of every accolade received.
Of primary importance now and in the future is maintaining the habitat for the many species of migratory birds that stop in on the region during the fall. These include Blue Jays, Towhees, and more than twenty species of Warblers who rest their wings and fill their stomachs as they prepare for their southward journey.
Four-hundred years ago, Native Americans discovered plentiful fishing and hunting on Bald Head Island. They were followed by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano, English adventurers such as Sir Walter Raleigh, and a parade of marauding pirates including Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard. The shallow waters around the barrier islands were a gem on the Atlantic coast that promised these men and many others plentiful food, fresh water, shelter from storms, and protection from pursuers. That history is well remembered, and last year on the 300th anniversary of Blackbeard's death, pirate ships and revelers from around the world filled the area with live music, treasure hunts, and the deafening sounds of cannon and musketry.
Bald Head Island played important roles during the Revolution, Civil War, and throughout WWII. For history buffs, looking out over the waves is to look back in time to periods when the waters just offshore were battlefields where the future of the country was decided. Today, those waters are peaceful and calm, and the only thing that churns them is the occasional storm.
The peaceful beauty and community atmosphere of the region make real estate on Bald Head Island some of the most attractive in North Carolina. Our REALTORS® would be happy to show you around and schedule showings of area homes for sale. Contact us to learn more about the real estate market in the region and to discover more about the island's features and resilient history.
The Oak Island Lighthouse stands at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, an iconic fixture of the North Carolina coast, where it has helped guide ships to safe harbor since 1958. Every year, the lighthouse is the focal point of the Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk, which offers an opportunity to stay fit, enjoy the gentle ocean breeze and picturesque scenery of Oak Island, and help raise money for a good cause.

The course has changed too, offering today's runners and walkers a chance to take in the beautiful sights along the coast of Oak Island including, of course, the lighthouse itself.
Each race in the Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk starts and finishes at the Middleton Park Extension in Oak Island. Ample parking is available in the area. Along the way, runners will meander through the quiet streets of Oak Island, along the Atlantic coast, past picturesque salt marshes, and broad beaches. The Oak Island Lighthouse marks the halfway turn-around point for the longest race of the day – the half marathon. Check out the official course maps to learn more!
This year's Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk takes place on Saturday, April 13, starting off bright and early with the Half Marathon at 7:30 a.m.. Our REALTORS® at Margaret Rudd & Associates would like to wish a very special Happy 50th Birthday to Holden Beach! Whether you're a frequent visitor or you're lucky enough to call Holden Beach your home, you know that any time spent in this fantastic town becomes an unforgettable memory.
For half of a century, the town of Holden Beach has been a favorite vacation destination for thousands of visitors. As a perfect place on the North Carolina coast for outdoor and watersports, Holden Beach is regularly ranked one of the top beaches for families in the United States. From kayaking and surfing to volleyball and sunbathing, Holden Beach has sandy and salty fun for everyone.
Long before it was a tourism hub, this 100-acre sandy stretch of land was purchased by Benjamin Holden. Three generations later, his great-grandson John Holden, Jr., started a successful fishery that persisted through the 1920s, even during the Depression years. John's success enabled him to build the "Old Hotel" in 1924.
During the 1930s, John's son Luther began building more cottages on the island to attract visitors to the beach, thus increasing tourism by the thousands all the way until the 1950s. Unfortunately, Hurricane Hazel destroyed most structures on Holden Beach, setting their progress back a full decade. By the 1980s, however, over 600 new cottages were built. That number jumped to over 2,500 in the early 2000s.
Today, Holden Beach is enjoyed by thousands of residents and guests alike. The warm family atmosphere and enduring spirit of this town are truly felt along the waterfront where adults and kids of all ages laugh, play and make memories together.
On Thursday, February 14th, you're invited to celebrate the bicentennial of Holden Beach at the Holden Beach Town Hall Public Assembly. Beginning at 2 p.m., cake and ice cream will be served as guests help create a 50th Anniversary Time Capsule. The fun continues on Saturday, February, 16th, as the Town Hall hosts a dinner featuring a presentation on the town's history. Following the dinner, you'll head down to the bonfire at the beach, where you can share your own personal history living or vacationing on Holden Beach.
All of us at Margaret Rudd & Associates hope to see you there!
You don't have to visit Holden Beach — you can call it home! There are many wonderful Holden Beach homes for sale that we're sure you'll fall in love with. The marsh grasses offer protection for a variety of birds and fish, and many species use the area for nesting and feeding. In the muddy areas, you can see coastal inhabitants such as small fish, fiddler crabs, and maybe even some oysters, mussels, clams, and snails. Herons, egrets, and gulls are native to the area and can often be seen among the marsh grasses.
If you're not in the mood to watch the wildlife, no problem. The marsh walk is still a great place to go for a walk and to enjoy being outdoors. There are several spots along the way that offer picturesque views of Southport and the nearby islands and rivers. And if you'd like to relax and take a break in a little shade, there is a gazebo where you can enjoy the view.

Deciding to buy a home is a huge step, and along with that choice comes the decision of where you want to live. Picking a geographic location is one thing, but deciding on the type of neighborhood you want to call home is equally important. While some home buyers prefer to live in the suburbs or even a rural area where commuting is the norm, the walkability of a neighborhood is becoming a more important factor to many. Our REALTORS® can help you pinpoint Brunswick County communities that are more walkable and show you area neighborhoods that fit your lifestyle.
While a walkable neighborhood isn't ideal for everyone, a community that promotes getting out on foot certainly offers plenty of benefits. Perhaps one of the most apparent advantages of walking versus driving is the boost it provides for your health. Walking provides exercise that helps keep the extra pounds off, promotes good circulation, keeps muscles toned, and provides a fresh intake of air for your respiratory system.
If you can walk to local parks, businesses and events versus using a vehicle, you're also helping the environment by reducing the use of fuel and emission of carbon dioxide.
Want to give your budget a boost? Living in a walkable neighborhood lessens the need for a vehicle and its related expenses such as auto insurance, maintenance, and fuel. You might even find yourself making more new friends and becoming more involved in community events if you choose a home in a walkable neighborhood.
If you've decided on a more active lifestyle and want to find a home in a walkable neighborhood, you may be wondering just what elements you should consider. Our REALTORS® are area experts whose primary goal is to assist you in finding your perfect home. Several factors make a neighborhood more walkable than others, and here are a few things you'll want to consider during your house hunt.
Choosing a walkable neighborhood can be a great choice for your lifestyle and your future. We'd love to discuss your real estate dreams and partner with you to find that special house. Contact our team at Margaret Rudd & Associates for more information about our local communities and homes for sale throughout Brunswick County.

When you're in the market to buy a home, there is a laundry list of things to consider in addition to the house itself. Real estate insiders advise to add factors like the neighborhood, walkability, schools, and commute time to work. If you do not work from your home, adding commute time to and from your job should be at the top of your wish list when you're house hunting. When you find a home, make sure your drive time doesn't turn your dream home into a nightmare.
Our REALTORS® are here with this help for factoring your commute time into your house hunt to find the right home for you and your family.
Many people opt to purchase a home for increased financial security or lower long-term housing costs. If buying a house increases your commute time, make sure you're not canceling out the benefits of homeownership.
Commute time affects your lifestyle, for better or worse. It affects how much time you can spend with family, friends, hobbies, and other activities you enjoy. For some people, long commutes mean higher stress levels and a more sedentary lifestyle, both of which can impact your health. But others use the time to unwind with music in the car or complete work-related tasks on the train. Nobody wants to sacrifice their health or all the things they enjoy in life, so thinking about your daily routine and individual preferences ahead of time can help.
On the other hand, better access to public transportation can make for a more relaxed commute, which can have a positive effect on your lifestyle, even if you're moving a greater distance from work.
Although some people would be hesitant to do it, a shorter commute where you can sacrifice a vehicle entirely could be an option. If you could bike to work or go from two cars to one, you might be able to put that extra money toward your home purchase.
When you begin searching for a home decide what constitutes an unreasonable commute time. Communicate that information with our REALTORS® so they have a better understanding of your exact home buying parameters.
If you have a job where you can set your hours, are self-employed, or can telecommute all or some of the time, good for you! You may be able to time your commute to avoid traffic. If you're only in the office occasionally or never, commute time won't make much difference.
You may have already included commuting costs in your home buying budget. Include the cost to commute so you can make an informed decision about your home purchase. Include the following items in your budget:
Also, include a dollar amount for your time. Extra-long commutes clock in at about 12-15 hours a week or more. You can't use that time for anything else, and you won't be getting paid for it.
At Margaret Rudd & Associates we know the importance of finding a home that fits your budget and lifestyle. Contact us today and get started on your search for Brunswick County homes for sale.
River Run Plantation homes may be the best-kept secret in the area, but they're not likely to remain a secret for very long! More and more home buyers exploring the homes for sale in Bolivia have been attracted to the unique charm of River Run Plantation.
If you're looking for a gated community that offers a serene style and the best amenities, then River Run Plantation may be what you've been searching for all this time.
Sitting on 375 beautiful acres on the southern coast of North Carolina, River Run Plantation benefits from rural seclusion that makes it a peaceful getaway from the rat race and fast-paced development of other areas. Lockwood Folly River is a key part of its layout and charm.
The Plantation is divided into seven distinct "stations" that all offer different types of homes. You can choose anything from palatial two-story brick homes to singlewide, doublewide, or modular homes. No matter your selection, you'll enjoy excellent quality and comfort.
But what makes a gated community is really special is the outstanding special features and the deep friendships you can create with your neighbors. River Run Plantation offers both of these in spades, with a slow-paced lifestyle that lets you enjoy the finer things.
The mature tall trees of River Run Plantation mean that no matter which lot a home is situated on, it benefits from shade as well as the beauty of nature. If you enjoy looking at fall foliage, for example, you'll love River Run Plantation.
Naturally, the centerpiece of just about any gated community is the clubhouse, which sits smack dab in the center of everything at River Run Plantation. Here, residents congregate for all kinds of fun group activities, outings, games, and much more.
Of course, there are plenty of things to do alone, with friends, or with the whole family.
You can lounge around at the pool or play a game of horseshoes. Go fishing out on the 360-foot pier or use the boat ramp to follow where the big ones are biting out on the river. A full-sized tennis court is available for long-time players or those who've always wanted to try the game.
Picnics and barbecues happen practically every weekend in dedicated areas, too. If you want to go one step further, River Run Plantation is convenient to the Atlantic Ocean via Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach is the state's southernmost inhabited island and is dotted with lovely beach cottages.
If River Run Plantation sounds like a treat, why not pay it a visit?
Our REALTORS® are waiting for your call. We'll provide you with all the information and advice you need to make home buying a snap. Before you know it, you could be relaxing on the Lockwood Folly River.

As an added bonus, many of these pets are already housebroken which makes the transition to your home easier. The volunteers at animal shelters really care about their residents, and these organizations make every effort to match pets and people with compatible personalities. Movie buffs might know the name "Cape Fear" from the 1991 Martin Scorsese film of the same name, itself a remake of a 1962 thriller. Of course, the real Cape Fear is a tidewater region of North Carolina anchored by the historic city of Wilmington.
For athletes, Cape Fear's reputation is built on something else entirely.
The Badwater Cape Fear race occurs annually on Bald Head Island in March: This year, it's happening on March 17. It includes both 50-kilometer and 51-mile race options and is well known as a challenging, yet invigorating event.
Badwater Cape Fear is the Sequel to the Toughest Race of All
The Badwater brand is behind a number of other races, including the most grueling in the world: The Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, a 135-mile race from Death Valley to California's Mt. Whitney. That starts nearly 300 feet below sea level at Badwater Basin ...
... and ends a day or two later at an elevation of 8,000 feet at the base of Mt. Whitney.
While Badwater Cape Fear is nowhere near that extreme, it still attracts hundreds of serious runners each year. The difference? Many first-time racers also find their way to Badwater Cape Fear, which is considered to have more picturesque views and a much easier learning curve.
It's widely thought of as a spectacular alternative to the deserts and mountains of the West Coast races.
In fact, the entire run takes place right along the gorgeous Atlantic seaboard. Runners have incredible views of the famous Frying Pan Shoals off to the east and pristine, untouched marshlands to their west throughout the journey. Temperatures usually run between 55-65 degrees on race day.
Visitors from Far and Wide Answer the Call to Badwater Cape Fear
Since runners have the opportunity to select either a 31-mile or 51-mile tour during the race, Badwater Cape Fear adapts to a range of conditioning levels.
It consists of:
The ultra-marathon kicks off at 7 AM. and ends at 9:45 PM, so there is plenty of time even for those who wish to go at their own pace. Over the past few years, athletes have come from all over North America, Colombia, Venezuela, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom.
Admission starts at $175 per person. The fun begins at 101 Lighthouse Wind on Bald Head Island.
Past visitors to the area recognize that address as the site of famous Old Baldy Lighthouse!
With a location just an hour from historic Wilmington, Bald Head and Southport have also served as vacation destinations for the runners, their families, and their supporters. Unique beauty and southern charm await, no matter if this is your first big race or your fiftieth.

Provisions are a relaxing and welcoming spot where you can pull up by car or boat. Orders are taken at the counter and guests can help themselves to beverages on the honor system. It's a great place to meet new friends: Locals swear by it, and out-of-town visitors quickly fall in love.
What will you find at Southport? Along with a complete selection of sandwiches, you'll enjoy your choice of the freshest local seafood. A full selection includes favorites like grilled yellowfin tuna, steamed shrimp, conch fritters and crab cakes a la carte.
As for specials, the restaurant is best known for its grilled yellowfin tuna dinner and its crab cake dinner featuring cucumber and potato salad. Lots of care is poured into the desserts as well: You can have rich, creamy Key Lime pie or bourbon pecan pie.
Beverages include soft drinks, tea, wine, and domestic or imported beer.
With plenty of room for walking and free parking on all streets, downtown Southport makes it easy for you to enjoy an excursion your way. Although Provisions is often the first place visited by those checking out the real estate market, there are many other terrific options.
Stay a while and you're sure to find enjoyable meals at local favorites like Atlantic Seafood and Steaks, Bella Cucina, Big Al's Slam Dunk Cafe, and the Bouncing Log. Dozens of restaurants are available, most of them locally owned and operated.

When it comes to shopping, Southport, NC won't disappoint. You'll find world-class shopping options here for everything your heart desires, topping off the many other amenities that have attracted so many people to make this place their new home.
Why Southport NC Shopping is Second to None
Southport is a town of just about 3,000 people, so you might not expect it to have all the high-end boutiques of a larger city. However, this town right on the mouth of famous Cape Fear is more than meets the eye – and shopping is one of its unexpected treasures.
Southport has long been known far and wide thanks to being featured prominently in a range of television and film productions. Within the state, it's the site of the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival, which hosts about 50,000 visitors each and every year.
Maybe it's not so surprising, then, that this classic fishing village has a lot to offer.
Discover a Haven of Shopping Delights
Downtown Southport offers a historic waterfront shopping district that epitomizes the classic charm of this seaside gem. The main shopping area is shaded by the canopies of centuries-old oak trees and the refreshing sea breeze follows you throughout your journey.
Sumptuous restaurants, classy shops, and welcoming hotels are abundant.
Here, you'll find jewelers, photography, handicrafts, art, and much more. The vast majority of the businesses are locally owned and operated, representing a true taste of the spirit of Southport.
Southport is also well known for its marinas, and anywhere you wander in the Old Downtown area, you'll be within earshot of warbling birds and the whisper of the sea. The town is known for its seafood restaurants, with seasonal menus based around local fish and crabs.
One thing visitors continually comment about is the welcoming atmosphere local business owners always strive to create. Visit Southport now and then and you'll soon find yourself being treated like a cherished regular. Decide to stay and you're sure to meet many new friends.
As enjoyable as the shopping is, that's not all you'll find Downtown. It also has an assortment of galleries and museums paying homage to the local area's unique maritime heritage. History buffs will see the past come alive ... both on display and in the many antique shops.
Buying a home is exciting, but it can also be a challenge. Choosing to relocate to Southport can make things easier. At any time of the year, you're likely to find an assortment of classic and modern-style homes to meet the needs of virtually any family.
True "seaside property" may go fast here, as it does in most other places – but it's hard to find better bargains on homes right within reach of the salty tang of the sea. Southport is truly unique for the many opportunities it affords young families, established professionals, and retirees.

Our Brunswick County beach communities promise a stunning spectacular this Independence Day. To make it easier on you, our REALTORS® have compiled a list of their favorite places to spend Independence Day.
Ocean Isle Beach
Ocean Isle Beach starts the celebration with a bang on Monday, July 3 at 9 PM. Watch our fireworks display from the Ocean Isle Beach Pier, beach or anywhere on the Island. (In the case of rain, fireworks will be rescheduled for July 6 at 9 PM). Our annual July 4 parade begins at 10 AM--decorated golf carts and bicycles are welcome!
Oak Island
As our nation prepares for its 241st birthday, Oak Island is preparing for its own Independence Day celebration. The annual Oak Island Beach Day will be held on Saturday, July 1 beginning at 9 AM and is sponsored by the Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department. The day will be filled with live entertainment, family fun and inflatables from 9 AM - 9 PM at Middleton Park. Don't miss our corn hole, bocce, sand castle, and volleyball contests. A skate boarding contest continues the fun at the skate park. The fun continues with a live beach band and shag contest. Due to damage caused by Hurricane Matthew, there will not be a fireworks display on Oak Island in 2017.
Sunset Beach
Start your day full of fun and festivities with a parade over the Old Bridge. This will involve patriotic music and flags waving. Sunset Beach has July 4 activities planned that are kid-tested and approved. You are encouraged to bring your decorated wagons, sneakers, strollers or bicycles. This will be followed by other games and activities. The pyrotechnic fun starts at 9 PM and you don't want to miss the spectacular show.
Holden Beach
The patriotic spirit is alive and well at Holden Beach. This residential community has always celebrated our nation's independence in a big way. Thousands flock the Holden Beach during the Independence holiday to bathe in the richness of spirit commemorating Old Glory. Some of the fun activities include firefighter's competition, children' entertainment, and games, arts/craft, parade, live entertainment, flag raising ceremony veteran's recognition ceremony and more. Colorful fireworks will then light up the sky to crown the day.
Bald Head Island
Join the Bald Head Island community in celebrating America's birthday with the signature Golf Cart Parade. It's always a spectacular experience having the island decorated with elaborate golf carts floats. The parade is, even more, fun since participants get a chance to decorate their golf carts for awards. There's even a Bald Head Island Conservancy picnic and at the end of it all, people get to enjoy spectacular pyrotechnic fun before they call it a day.

Once you've had your fill of fun and sun, sit down and listen to local melodies played by some of the best musicians in Holden Beach. That is, sit until you can't stand it anymore - the toe-tapping music will ensure that you have to get up and dance!
Days at the Docks isn't the only family-friendly activity available in Holden Beach. There's enough going on that you could create years of family memories and still have much more to see and do. Holden Beach is an ideal setting to raise a family and put down roots.
North Carolina's top-rated beaches are the pinnacle of relaxation, and Holden Beach provides a family-friendly setting for exploring the surf and sea at your own leisure. The calm surf laps gently against a white beach of fine, powdery sand, perfect for building sandcastles, working on your tan or just lazing about on a sunny afternoon. Uncluttered by shops and high-rise buildings, it's fun at the beach the way it should be. You can even join up with one of the many volunteer organizations that search for sea turtle nests and help baby sea turtles make their way to the water after they hatch – a truly unforgettable experience.
Holden Beach is a community committed to its residents, and the summer Sunday evening concerts reflect that. Every Sunday evening during the summer, there's a free music concert featuring the oldies, classic Motown, rock, or, of course, beach music. It's just one of many events focused on bringing out the community to mingle and get acquainted with neighbors.
Magic Mountain is an amazing amusement park located near Holden Beach. Boasting go-carts, waterslides, mini-golf, and delicious food, it's an easy way to make family memories that will last a lifetime. There are special offerings for smaller kids and an ice cream shop with to-die-for flavors, making this an excellent option for spending some quality family time together.

Nestled on an 8-mile-long barrier island overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Holden Beach, NC is a quiet seaside town that offers stunning scenery and a laid-back, family atmosphere.
An abundance of fun, family-friendly events throughout the year is one of the reasons Holden Beach has been nationally recognized as one of the premier family Beaches in the United States. And one of the best events of the year is coming up soon—the Holden Beach Free 5K Color Run.
The Holden Beach Free 5K Color Run takes place on April 1, 2017, and all are welcome to enjoy the race, either as a spectator or as a participant. There are no age restrictions, and kids under the age of 5 are even allowed to ride their bikes. The whole idea is to get as many members of the community as possible in a fun-filled day that raises money for a good cause. So whether you want to walk, run, or just cheer from the sidelines is up to you!
The race starts right under the bridge at 123 Jordan Boulevard in Holden Beach, NC. Registration is at 9 AM on the morning of April 1, and the race kicks off at 10 AM.
T-shirts for the race are available for $10, though you don't have to purchase one to participate. Just wear a white T-shirt of your own and be prepared to be showered in a burst of bright-colored powder as you pass by the crowd—that's the "color" part of the color run! It's a good opportunity to show off your colors, so to speak. If you plan on watching the race from the sidelines, you can still participate by dousing color on the runners. Color will be available for free on the day of the race.
All the money raised by the Holden Beach Free 5K Color Run goes toward supporting programs that help keep kids active and fight childhood obesity. One lucky school gets a hefty $500 prize.
Holden Beach homes offer access to some of the most beautiful scenery and pristine beaches on the coast of North Carolina, along with great family events like the Holden Beach Free 5K Color Run. It's a great place to live, work and call home.

Buying a home is likely the most significant purchase you'll make in your lifetime--so it's important to get it right. When you're looking for the perfect place to live, consider buying a home in a gated community.
Living in a gated community gives buyers a safer environment in which to live, the opportunity to watch your home's value increase and the chance to enjoy an active lifestyle.
Improved security is a common reason people buy homes in gated community. While levels of security vary from community to community, you'll typically see security patrolling neighborhoods, gates surrounding the perimeter of the property, sign in procedures for guests and security personnel at entrances and exits.
In addition, depending upon which community you choose, you will be able to appreciate lifestyle benefits like private golf courses, club houses, tennis courts, pools and events.
There are a number of beautiful, well-maintained communities in Brunswick County each with its own personality. Many of our area's most desirable luxury communities cater to a unique lifestyle where you can fill your days with coastal living, tennis and golf.
If you're interested in buying a home in Brunswick County, our REALTORS® at Margaret Rudd and Associates, Inc. can help you learn more about the communities in our local area. We've created this list of gated communities in our local real estate area to get you started:
You can maximize the return on the purchase of your home should you decide to sell it in the future. Buying a home in a gated community typically sells for about $30,000 more than those in traditional neighborhoods. The overall visual appeal of a community's homes play a part in the higher resale dollars received.
Community bylaws require homes and lawns to adhere to established standards to keep properties maintained and make properties more appealing to new buyers.
While many buyers appreciate living in a gated community, it may not be the ideal choice for everyone. Discover more Brunswick County homes by contacting a Margaret Rudd & Associates, Inc. agent today.
